Drifting Towards Compromise

‘Drifting towards compromise is often worse than an abrupt turn towards it.’ Especially during the age of sail, slowly drifting off course was dangerous. Even if it was ever so slight, a seemingly minor miscalculation during an ocean voyage could compound into being hundreds of miles off course by the end. And that’s what makes slowly drifting off course so harmful. Unless you’re vigilant and are constantly checking your position the effects often become obvious only after you arrived somewhere you never intended to go. However, an abrupt change in course is immediately noticeable. It alerts not only you but others around who can yell out a warning. Therefore, not taking any appropriate action is a clear sign, both to you and others, that the direction you’re now heading is where you actually want to go. Life is like this too. Marriage is a prime example. Marriages rarely end because of a sudden sharp turn towards the rocks. Rather, it’s by couples slowly drifting apart as they voyage across the oceans of life. So too, the Christian life. Many shipwreck their faith not by a sudden turn towards compromise but rather by a slow drift towards it that has occurred over years. So what can be done? 1) Be constantly setting your moral compass to the Bible. 2) Deliberately seek out sound biblical teaching. 3) If you’ve gone off course, be humble enough to turn back. 4) Have a good church family who will tell you the truth.
