Dying From Spiritual Thirst

‘A parched soul drinks any poison’ July 30, 1945 was the day that the US navy suffered the greatest loss of life from the sinking of a single ship. The USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. Few life boats were deployed because the ship sank in only 12 minutes. Most of the survivors simply had to rely upon nothing but life jackets. Many would die from shark attacks inspiring the famous monologue by the character Quint in the movie Jaws. But perhaps the worst fate awaited those who would slowly die from thirst. Imagine floating in water as far as the eye could see but unable to drink it. But many drank the seawater becoming delirious. Some turned on and killed their fellow crewmen. Others claimed to see a rescue ship beneath them and dove down never to return. In a spiritual sense, our souls are parched without God. Many try to quench this thirst with the things of this world so they become spiritually delirious, turning on others and living destructive lives. In John 4 Jesus met just such a person, a woman who was a social outcast because of her scandalous behaviour. But Jesus offered her spiritual water from God and she drank. Will you?
